Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Traumatic events can happen throughout our lives in many ways, yet stay with us forever. If you are tired of feeling stuck in the past and exhausted from always feeling on guard, not sleeping, believing negative thoughts about yourself, or find yourself having great difficulty connecting to those around you, it may be time for treatment. You may not even realize you have PTSD because you have lived with these symptoms for so long. We can provide assessment to identify if you have PTSD and provide treatment to relieve these symptoms so you can move forward with the life you want for yourself.
PTSD is a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event, like combat, a loved one dying of suicide, a natural disaster, a car accident, or sexual abuse. It's normal to have upsetting memories, feel on edge, or have trouble sleeping after this type of event. If symptoms last more than a few months, it may be PTSD. The good news is PTSD is a disorder of non-recovery, which means you haven’t recovered YET.
Treatments we provide:
All of the Trauma treatments offered are of the most effective treatments for PTSD.
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD provides a way to understand why recovery from traumatic events is difficult and how symptoms of PTSD affect daily life. The focus is on identifying how traumatic experiences change thoughts and beliefs, and how thoughts influence current feelings and behaviors. An important part of the treatment is addressing ways of thinking that might keep individuals “stuck” and get in the way of recovery from symptoms of PTSD and other problems. CPT is provided in twelve 60 minute sessions or less.
Prolonged Exposure (PE) for PTSD teaches you to gradually approach trauma-related memories, feelings, and situations that you have been avoiding since your trauma. By confronting these challenges, you can decrease your PTSD symptoms. The goal is to help you understand that trauma-related memories are not dangerous and do not need to be avoided. The therapist will ensure the therapy session is a safe space to confront your fears directly. PE is provided in approximately 8-15 sessions lasting for 60-90 minutes.
Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a structured, short-term treatment model that effectively improves a range of trauma-related outcomes in 8-25 sessions with the child/adolescent and caregiver. Although TF-CBT is highly effective at improving youth posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and diagnosis, a PTSD diagnosis is not required in order to receive this treatment.
Treatment in person or via telehealth? Research supports the efficacy in CPT provided via telehealth and we have witnessed many of our clients make incredible change through this tool, if in-person is not available or preferred.
